If you love Diet Coke or any other diet soda, we might have some bad news for you. And it isn’t even related to caffeine!
According to several different studies, even though diet drinks supposedly consist of zero net calories, they can have a lot of negative effects. So if you love soda but want to cut your risk of disease, it might be a good idea to kick it to the curb!
Side Effects Of Soda On Health
Studies shows that phosphate and phosphoric acid found in colas and soft drinks acidify the blood and affect the action of glutathione, which is an antioxidant enzyme. In addition, these drinks lack any vitamins or minerals. By consuming these drinks, people cut their intake of water and milk and deprive themselves of essential nutrients which keep the skin healthy and glowing. Thus, the skin becomes dull and more prone to wrinkles and aging.
Most of the people take recourse to soft drinks to quench their thirst. The soda or beverages can only give you a temporary relief, after a few minutes of drinking them you begin to feel thirst and dryness in mouth and throat.
The high quantity of sodium, caffeine and sugar contained in soda will make your body get dehydrated very soon.
You may have experienced that even two liters of soft drinks you can drink within an hour or two whereas it is difficult to drink two liters of water even in 3 hours time as water makes you get fill quickly and retains it for a longer time.
3#.Effects Of Caffeine
In most carbonated beverages, caffeine is added to make it more addictive. Caffeine in carbonated drinks is more readily absorbed than in any other drink (like coffee, chocolate etc.). Caffeine disturbs sleep by stimulating the nervous system. It also makes premenstrual syndrome worse, causes dehydration and induces the stomach to produce acids, aggravating hyperacidity. Since caffeine disturbs sleep, the body is more likely to produce C – reactive protein, which plays an important role in heart disease.
4#.Can Cause Fatty Liver Disease
A common sweetener used in soft drinks is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), made from corn starch. Unlike glucose, which can be broken down by the cells of your body, fructose can only be processed by the liver. When consumed in excess, it can cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition that is also associated with high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
Since HFCS, being cheaper than sugar, is commonly used to sweeten drinks, some research goes so far as to attribute the obesity epidemic, in large part, to the HFCS in soft drinks.
In diet sodas, aspartame is used as a substitute for sugar, and can actually be more harmful. It has been linked to almost a hundred different health problems including seizures, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, diabetes, and emotional disorders. It converts to methanol at warm temperatures and methanol breaks down to formaldehyde and formic acid. Diet sodas also increase the risk of metabolic syndrome, which causes belly fat, high blood sugar and raised cholesterol.
6#.Messed Up Hormones
It’s not just the soda that’s causing all the problems. Nearly all aluminum soda cans are lined with an epoxy resin called bisphenol A (BPA), used to keep the acids in soda from reacting with the metal. BPA is known to interfere with hormones, and has been linked to everything from infertility to obesity and diabetes and even some forms of reproductive cancers.
7#.Unknown Side Effects of GMOs
Take a look at the ingredients list for any soda and chances are that most of those ingredients are derived from corn. Independent scientists have found that, in animals, genetically modified crops, or GMOs (Genetically modified organisms), are linked to digestive tract damage, accelerated aging, and even infertility.
In a study on 465 patients of chronic kidney disease and 467 healthy people, it was found that drinking 2 glasses of cola daily, but not non-cola beverages, raised the risk of kidney disease by 2 times. This was attributed to the phosphoric acid in colas which causes urinary disturbances, kidney stones, and chronic kidney disease.
Harvard researchers have recently positively linked soft drinks to obesity. The study found that 12 year olds who drank soda were more likely to be obese than those who didn’t, and for each serving of soda consumed daily, the risk of obesity increased 1.6 times.
The phosphoric acid commonly found in soda prevents the body from absorbing calcium.
The Phosphoric acid curtails the healthy functioning of digestive enzymes whereby blocking proper absorption of vitamins and nutrients.
11#.Lack Of Nutrients
There is absolutely no nutritional value in soda whatsoever. Not only are there many harmful effects of soda, but there are not even any positive benefits to outweigh them. Soda is an unnatural substance that harms the body.
12#.It Messes With Your Brain
When adolescent rats were fed sugary drinks for one month they showed learning difficulties and bad memory skills.
Scientists also discovered swelling in the hippocampus – often associated with people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
13#.It Can Damage Your DNA
Preservatives, like sodium benzaoate, found in your favourite fizzy drink can damage your DNA and lead to health issues like liver cirrhosis and Parkinson’s disease.
The water used in soda is just simple tap water and can contain chemicals like chlorine, fluoride and traces of heavy metals.
15#.Bad For The Teeth
Drinking soda regularly causes plaque to build up on the teeth and can lead to cavities and gum disease.
