Everyone knows spending time with your partner is important. After all, too much time apart is just as bad as too little. But can you really say it’s quality time? Watching TV is fun, but Two and a Half Men can wait. Here are 10 ways to spend more quality time with your partner that can help rekindle the spark in your relationship or make it burn brighter and hotter than ever before.
1. Recreate your first date together.
Whether you went out for a stargazing expedition or burgers at Wendy’s, recreating your first date as precisely as possible is a good way to show you remember why you fell in love with your partner. If it was a big, flashy date, make it big and flashy again. If it wasn’t, keep it simple. The point is to do a little emotional time travel to before the jobs, bills, kids, and family became the focus of your lives. Or, if your first date wasn’t all that great to start with, you can always ask your partner what they wish your first date had been instead and do that.
2. Try a new sport.
Sometimes just getting out of the routine and trying something new is a good way to spend more quality time with your partner. There are as many ways to do this as there are sports out there. You can hit the roller rink, the squash court, the lake, or the peaks for a little skiing. What really matters isn’t what you do, but that you’re doing it with the one you love.
3. Play to your talents.
Some people are really good at writing stories and poems. Others can make a guitar do whatever they need it to do. Still others are gifted with a pencil, charcoal or brushes. Whatever your strength is, do something unique for your partner like taking a sexy photo or drawing him or her wearing just those boots you love. This can be considered a form of extended foreplay, and the result is something you’ll remember forever.
4. Take a vacation or weekend getaway
The same four walls can really close in on a couple after a while, no matter how much they love each other or how much they like each others’ company. Why not arrange for a weekend or vacation away from it all? This can be a fun and enjoyable way to get “back to basics” and remember why you want to be, not just husband and wife, but man and woman (or gender-appropriate pairing, as you like). A change of scenery can do wonders for your relationship and help you see each other in a softer, more romantic light.
5. Have a fancy night in.
Can you cook like a gourmet chef? Do you know how to properly sear meringue? Or do you just have the number of a really good restaurant that permits ordering out? Make a night of it by putting on your best threads and your nicest shoes, popping a bottle of wine and playing your partner’s favorite music.
6. Read your lover a bedtime story.
To set the mood for a romantic evening, why not choose a sexy story? Maybe your lover has a romance section on his or her Kindle or has been trying to get you to read something a little naughtier. This is a great way to spend quality time with your partner because it not only gives you the intimacy of being close together, but it just might lead to something really spicy to top off your evening.
7. Play a video game together.
Okay, not everyone’s going to consider this “quality time,” but what if you were to pick up an old-school game you both enjoyed as kids, like Super Mario Bros.? Make popcorn, turn out the lights, move the bedding into the living room as a pallet, and gorge yourselves on junk food while you go after the bad guys? This is a fun way to get in touch with your inner child and feel closer to your partner too.
8. Have an old movie night.
Remember when Hollywood actors had to have real talent and chemistry? An old movie night with classics like Casablanca, The Thin Man, Arsenic and Old Lace, Vincent Price’s movies, or even The Wizard of Oz is a fun way to relax, unwind and rediscover some old favorites while enjoying your partner’s company.
9. Give your partner a bath.
Everyone likes to be pampered and fussed over every once in a while, and a bath is an intimate way to get closer. Make your partner’s favorite drink or cocktail (yes, a Coke’s fine if your partner doesn’t drink alcohol), light some candles, burn a little incense, and run them a warm bubble bath. Once they’re in the tub, help them wash those hard-to-reach areas. This is a great, sexy way to cap off a night… or start one.
10. Have a pillow fight.
A pillow fight sounds silly and childish, which is the entire point. Put on your pajamas, throw a mattress on the floor, and have at it! In addition to being a great stress reliever, this has a pretty good chance of leading to a tickle fight. Just remember not to be too rough. The idea is to amuse your partner and make him or her laugh, not Hulk-smash him or her into the floor!
